Humility

I love the book of Psalms. It's a source of encouragement and strength and has been a help to me many times through the hardships of life! The other day while reading in the book of Psalms there was a particular passage of verses that seemed to jump out at me. Psalms 113:4-7 reads:
The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.
Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,
Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;
Who is God? He's the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. There is none higher than He!
Yet, He humbles himself to get down to our level and to save souls.

"He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill."

If we know that He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords and He, who is high above the heavens humbles His own self, how much more should we as mere humanity humble ourselves in the presence of our God? Why should we ever think that we are anything?

"Humility:
The minute you think you have it, you lost it."

It amazes me that such a great and mighty God would humble Himself to, as the old song says, "save a wretch like me." He knew the sins that we would commit. He knew the mistakes we would make. Yet He gave Himself for us that we might be saved. We who never did anything to deserve His love and mercy. Why then is it so hard for some to forgive others when we ourselves don't deserve forgiveness from God?

My dad has a quote on the screen saver of his laptop that I would like to share:

"How can a man with lust for praise and promotion preach the Gospel of Him who made Himself of no reputation?"


This can apply to any of us! We can't be like Jesus if we are lifted up in pride. No flesh should glory in His presence! (I Corinthians 1:29) Look at what the Bible has to say about Jesus. Philippians 2:5-8 reads:

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.


Lord, next time I start thinking I'm something, I want to remember that You humbled Yourself for me.
