"Self pity is the first step towards backsliding."
....said a good elder to me recently. I don't think I will ever forget this saying! If you really think about it, no one ever backslides without first getting to focused on self. If we focus on our own desires, problems, etc., we will stray further and further away from God. No wonder Jesus said "lift up your eyes and look on the fields." Lifting up our eyes requires us to get our eyes off ourselves. We can't do much for God if our eyes are on ourselves.
There is something about when we begin to feel sorry for our own selves. The devil looks for those in a state of self pity; they're easy prey. They devil can easily use your self pity to his advantage. So next time you begin to feel sorry for yourself, remember...

I know some really good people that have backslid because they were really going through it and got to feeling sorry for themselves. Sadly, it got so bad that they got their eyes off Jesus and were soon gone.
Sure, we all go through things we don't like and don't understand. There will be heart ache and pain that comes into all of our lives. I have found that if I will focus on God and also on helping others instead of pitying myself, God will help and bless me with the strength that I need.
