Salt and Light

My pastor was teaching/preaching recently and spoke some things concerning salt and light which I had not before considered. Jesus said "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid." (Matthew 5:14) He also said, "Ye are the salt of the earth" in the previous verse. Light does not have to touch you in order to have an effect upon you. Light can affect one even from a distance. One distant beacon of light can give hope. But what of salt? Salt has no effect on a person if it is not tasted. Salt must touch us.

In this dark world, just by allowing the Holy Ghost to shine through us in the way we behave and speak every day, we can be a light  -  even to the quiet observer or passer-by. People will take notice of the light, even if they aren't interacting with you directly. Light is powerful! One small light can impact a multitude of people. Living right, being honest, working hard, staying modest -  these are all things that will go a very long way. You better believe people are taking notice, even if they don't say anything.  But as already mentioned, not only are we to be a light in this dark world, but we are to be the salt of the earth. Unlike light, salt must touch to impact. If we are to be the salt of the earth, we must be willing to touch lives. Willing to go out of our way. Willing to visit, teach Bible studies, and pray with people. Willing to just spend time and lend them a listening ear. Willing to show them the love of God through our actions and not just our words.

Salt and light. I want to be both.
